You need to be on good tyres or you are wasting your time. If the Mojos worked and nothing else changed (and you were on the pace) surely this must point to something.
Your bent axle and binding brakes could also be masking the issue. Plus pushing the seat back might not be the best option for handling. Seat position tends to be optimal for most chassis and if you go too far back so does the weight which may be affecting the handling (and assisting with the understeer).
If all is ok with the chassis there is no reason why it shouldn't be that far away, pace wise, on comparison with a new one and i would certainly be spending what cash you can afford on tyres first (after re-setting the seat, the brake and axle) before considering 25mm stubs and hubs.
