I'm not that convinced rib protectors would work for a shunt from behind, I've always thought of them as being for spreading the load when cornering in a high grip kart on a surface with decent grip - especially if your kart starts to hop.
For tracks like Warden Law, I never used a rib protector as it's such a low grip surface - most of those laps were on 250 gearbox karts too so good brakes, good grippy tyres and awesome power.
Teesside is very high grip so I bought a rib protector when I started racing Rotax there and have continued to do so with the lower grip prokarts. If I forgot to take it to a pro kart meeting, I wouldn't be concerned as my seat is so tight I need to be surgically removed after each heat anyway.
To Garry's point, if I've been out of the seat for a few months, even with a rib protector at Teesside I get some very impressive bruises with the Rotax - your body must need to get used to the pounding it gets.
