The top 3 most popular chassis makes tend to be 7kart, MS, Wright R2/Suzuka. Any of those can give good results on the day. There are other makes out there but tbh they tend not to be that much cheaper and are more of an unknown.
The engines - going in on a budget, the GX160s have a massive variety in terms of performance unless you know the history or have seen them perform. You are most likely to end up with what is known as clubman engines, which are just off the shelf rather than selected parts and/or optimised within the rules. The clubman engines will get you on track but you will soon be wanting more!!
You are more likely to find a budget chassis/ clubman engine package at a good price.
The other option is buy a rolling chassis then use GX200 extreme engines from RPM. A lot more power, all engines supplied to the same spec and importantly power outputs are closely matched. The engines are also sealed to prevent any tampering of the internals. Its quite a new series so second hand units rare. The new price is very reasonable tho in comparison to the selected parts 160s. Also some circuits will let you try for free or rent. Speak to RPM if your interested in that route.
As for tracks, if WL is your 1st option then Teesside must be on the radar and is worth a visit. They run on different weekends so you could run both or see which you prefer.
