For years I used a tape measure across bare rims to set toe and camber and was suitably accurate with both. I do however now use front and rear lasers and they do save a lot of time.
When using lasers, you must make sure they are accurate fairly regularly as little knocks (or lending them to a ham fisted gorilla) can affect the direction of the light beam. I bought mine second hand and one of the front lasers and one of the rear lasers where sufficiently far out that a tape measure would have done a much better job. Unless they lost their accuracy whilst Parcel Farce were throwing them around a sorting office, the kart of the guy I bought them off must have handled like a pig.
As you're a newbie, you might be better off asking someone in the paddock to check and set the kart for you and pay them back in bacon sarnies and beer.
