Interesting theory but doesn't really stand up. IMO. Setting the clearance with the cam follower off the base circle will give more clearance than intended, when the engine is running Correct procedure for setting clearance on any cam is to turn the engine until the valve e.g. inlet is fully open ,then turn 1 full revolution, so the follower is on the centre of the cam base circle.Then set the clearance. If you are running steel pushrods (T1) the valve clearance will increase as the engine heats up hence 2-4 thou. cold. The T2 with alloy pushrods as standard should keep the clearance more constant as engine temperature rises hence higher cold clearance setting of 8? thou. RS you do not tell us what carbs you are running. If gx type are the choke plates still in position and operating? Or the cold start system on other exotica? Are the plugs dry or wet when attempting to start.? Try 5ml petrol down the plughole.
