Let's be precise here!
No! It's NOT a 'CRIME' unless you could be shown to have PLANNED or CONSPIRED to defraud the insurance company! That sort of PLANNING may WELL be a crime!
However, if it happens by accident: e.g, mum and you intend to share the car with her useing 90% of the time and you only 10% of the time..... but mum sprains her ankle and thus she CAN'T use the car as much as she planned...... then it's UNLIKELY that the courts would judge that you PLANNED to defraud!
Again, however, it STILL may invalidate your insurance if you don't TELL them and then continuin to DRIVE the car may mean that you ARE breaking the law by being uninsured!
Finally, it was our experience that the insurance companies have got VERY wise to this 'stunt' and make adding a 'youngster' to a more senior person's policy is hardly ANY cheaper than BOTH of you getting you OWN insurance or telling the insurance company the TRUTH about your intended usuage!
