1) As yet I haven't read the article. When I have done so I will respond.

You have proven my point. The science has become relevant BECAUSE it has created the machine I'm using, the clothes I'm wearing..... Do a survey of the global population as to the relevance of string theory to their lives in the foreseeable future. What answers would you expect from non-science-followers?
Until such time as consensus is reached on the four questions I posed, the problem (or lack thereof) will remain one for scientists and politicians, not the general public.
