Have used a few from the cheapy Binatone carrera upwards and all pretty much the same for the UK but if you are planning on trips further afield then Tom Tom is IMHO about the best. Get the one loaded with europe as the price difference is not a great deal between that and the UK mapping only and handy for trips across the channel.

Tom Tom seems to refresh at a bit quicker rate than some others as well and is a lot quicker than some at re plotting a route if you have a hold up a little way up the road. You can also connect your bluetooth phone and use it as a hands free device.

The only good thing about Binatone that is absent on some dearer models is you can get an add on module that will pick up SOME local radio traffic reports,just an aerial that goes along your windscreen and a little box that obviously acts as the receiver,nothing obtrusive.

Halfords have some good deals at the moment.
