That's a mis-use of statistics. The cameras are NOT 'manned' by Policemen, they are manned by CIVILIANS who would NOT have been doing Police work if the cameras didn't exist.
What has happened is that the camreas have RELEASED more police to do DIFFERENT jobs (and the numpties of this site will tell you they are more IMPORTANT jobs)..... However, at EXACTLY the same time, the Police have been forced into far more 'back-office' duties at the same time as the period of the introduction of cameras.
The only 'proof' that I can give is that the number of bobbies-on-the-beat has ALSO reduced at the same time. You are not suggesting that THEY have disappeared because of speed cameras....?
Having said that, we did the calculation here once before. To deliver the same kind of 'adherence' to the speed laws that the new Specs-Bank has done to the A14 North of Cambridge, we'd need around SIXTY new Policemen.... I can't remember the cost calculation but ..... if you are proposing that we replace cameras with 'real coppers' I'd not argue with you...... so long as it's YOU that pays the taxes and not ME!
Ian
PS.... it's nice to be on the same 'side' as you, for a change!
