I wasn't implying that "not being quite as bad" as some opressive countries is a good thing and that anyone should allow the country they're in to dictate what they find morally acceptable.
All I was pointing out is that, like it or not, every country in the world has their own individual ways when it comes to their laws and what they allow and don't allow. I am prepared to respect the laws and attitudes of another country when I visit, so why should it seem unreasonable for visitors to Britian, France or wherever to be expected to do the same? I'm just saying that Britian probably needs to loose the current "softly-softly" approach and stop trying to accommodate anything and everything.
Likewise, if the French government feels strongly that the wearing of burkas poses a security risk etc. then they are perfectly within their rights to disallow it!
