It's simple.... chevrons on the road give you a GUIDE.... in exactly the same way that white 'dots' down the centre of the road act as a 'guide'.
To USE the central line, you don't have to study EACH DOT. As with the chevrons, you don't have to study EACH CHEVRON to use the information given by them!

As a technique in 'discussions', test you OWN arguments 'at the limit'. Look how your views react when tested to the EXTREMES. You argue that there MIGHT be too much information in road signs to drive safely as drivers become 'distracted'.....
Taken to the extreme, wouldn't THAT imply that NO ONE should be allowed to drive down a High Street because of the distracing:-
Road signs Road Furniture Pedestrians Cars Shop Windows Adverts Newspaper vendors Bicycles Animals Etc. Etc. Etc.
What we say is... when there is a LOT of confusing and potentially distracting information coming at you..... SLOW DOWN so that you DO have time to process ALL the RELEVANT information, safely!
