Your negative / hyper-critical attitude makes me smile (in sympathy, or is it apathy). Constructive criticism is always welcome, but whinging just turns people off. There are several things that must be thought through in the first instance. For example:
Before any 'enhancements' are made, what would be the impact upon those users that only have a slow network connection? Not everyone has access to fast broadband, in fact there are still areas of the country that do not have broadband connectivity at all! I assume that you have a broadband connection, so that's alright then, as far as you are concerned.
There are the Features and Benefits to then assess. Lots of applications / sites have loads of features, but are they really beneficial to the vast majority? There are also the cost implications of putting in additional 'Features' that in the main will rarely get used. Software development is certainly not a cheap commodity! If you are a software developer, I suppose you could offer your services for free.
Straightforward functionality / ease of use is paramount. The forums are text based for a good reason. They allow simpletons, like me, to contribute without having to have been on an IT literacy course. Cosmetics sell product, but functionality is what makes them work.
The SQL Server timeouts may not be a fault of this site, but the actual system upon which it is hosted. Do you know if it is on its own dedicated server or is just a Virtual Machine on a larger system? VMware systems do have a habit of slowing down at times. Perhaps it could also be the size of the 'pipe' that connects to the host.
I could go on and on but I may end up whinging.
