Chris....
The problems caused by an asteroid big enough to damage America as much as you suggest will do more damage than a nuclear plant 'exploding'.
Yes... there COULD be a smallish Asteroid (e.g., 3 metres across) that makes a direct hit on a containment vessel and that would expose the core.
However, the exposure of a 'still reacting' core HAS happened.... in 1986... at Cernobyl so we already KNOW what is the likely outcome. The damage was HUGE but NOT mind-blowing. You can see a list of the NAMES of those directly killed by the incident on this web page:-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deaths_due_to_the_Chernobyl_disaster
The numbers of DIRECT kills was SO low .... as you'll see.
Obviously, that doesn't cover those who died from exposure to radio-activity or 'poisoning' later. The estimate for those who developed Chernobyl-linked cancers are about 4,000. Let's assume they ALL died. However, let's also assume that is LUDOICROUSLY low and we'll raise that to 100,000 just to take all 'errors' ot of the question. That's the same as the number of car-deaths in the UK in 40 years at the present rate. Across Europe, we lose about 39,000 due to road deaths each year..... so..... Chernobyl in 1986 = 3 year's EU Road Deaths..... The Chernobyl disaster did NOT cause HUGE numbers of deaths....
Now, I am NOT saying that those who died in Chernobyl don't MATTER.. it was APPALLING! I am asking you to keep the deaths from a rector total failure in PERSPECTIVE. Remember, I lived through Chernobyl and, I suspect, you were small, then.
