Neither the R32 of the R35 was designed FOR tracks. The original R32 is pretty SLOW.... unless 'tuned' when it can be OUTRAGEOUS!
We were comparing ROAD cars and, having driven all the types from R32 upward on the road, the R35 is the best so far.... by quite a margin.
'Age' definitely is part of the problem. Earlier cars do have a 'halo' but so many of them were not as good as we remember. The original, basic, Escort was truly awful, even from the start However, people remember the Mexico and/or the RS series and those lend a glow to the bog-standard ones which they simply do NOT deserve. Basically, the first Escort was an Anglia in drag.... which was, at heart, a Sit-Up-And-Beg Popular.... again in drag!! Just look at the suspension of the Escort and compare it to the S.U.A.B. Pop....... for that matter, compare the suspension to the cart in Constable's 'Haywain'....
