Haven't you been following the 'twist' of the 'Hot Diffuser'?
The upward-curving rear floor tray (diffuser)develops downforce. If you make your exhaust exits eject the gases under this, you can increase your downforce, quite legally.
However.....
The rules specifically ban forcing air/gases over these other than from using the WASTE gases. What certain teams have been doing is to CONTINUE forcing exhaust gases over the diffuser, even when they are on 'over-run' (officially, off the throttle).
Charlie Whiting apparently declared these illegal last weekend and WAS going to enforce the rule BEFORE the GP..... but....... certain teams told Charlie that it would require significant re-programming (re-mapping) of the engines to do it and that there wasn't time to do it......... and dozy-Charlie BELIEVED them.....!
The quickest teams appear to be those who have made best use of this ILLEGAL activity.
There is a second twist..... KERS is supposed to develop it's stored energy during 'over-run' (as if!)..... if the engines are NOT (in reality) going into over-run..... just into 'arrive-in-neutral-while-still-running-the-motor'..... it makes a mockery of the whole ETHOS behind KERS.
Which team has been the fastest this year and which team is having the most trouble with KERS.....?
We may now have found out what has made Red Bull so quick for the last few years!
Hispania say they WILL protest the use of such illegally hot-blown-diffusers at some point during the Monacoi weekend if Charlie doesn't do HIS DAMNED JOB (for a change!)...... perhaps we'll see an end to the Red-Bull domninance.......
If it IS banned, we will...... but I don't trust Charlie as he has regularly bent the rules to suit the politics!
However, with FIAt being slow at the moment...... it may well SUIT the FIA/FIAt to find against Red-Bull on this one..
... I hope....!
