The rust was cheap steel but it was mainly due to all the strikes that were happening, all the cars were being left out unpainted and untreated so the rust started before they even got paint on them.
What I meant about looking after them was, for example the 2.0ts was a 170 bhp normally aspirated engine at a time when most other 2.0's were around 120 - 130 bhp, so they were more highly stressed anyway, and the cambelts had to be changed at 36k miles or 3 years max, I have never seen one (that wasnt owned by an alfisti) where this was followed and they wondered why belts etc were failing. Take my boss, he had a 2.0ts for 4 years and hadnt had it serviced once (not even oil change) and then wondered why the bottom end let go. I ended up taking an engine with top end damage and spliced the 2 engines together. I now go over his house every six months to change oil etc and it hasnt missed a beat since. They are just take a little more care than others as they are more highly tuned.
