News has become an uncontrollable monster, it no longer just reports, but it creates news just by virtue of the power of suggestion and self fulfilling prophecy.

As for the Iraq war, it was only nessasary to create an illusion of a simplistic reason to invade for media consumption. The really good/sound reasons were far too complicated for mass understanding.
The sad fact is, that it backfired and now hundreds and thousands will die in countries like Syria because polititions are too worried about their own skins to do anything.
