The goverment don't seem too bothered about the reaction of newspapers when radical clerics are let in..

As for "I don't think the Government are scared of the reaction of militant religionists" - they are EXACTLY who this government are scared of. Why did the police back down and retreat during the anti-Israel protests, but dive in with batons flailing on other occasions? This government is petrified of upsetting certain parts of the population.

The muslim MP making the biggest fuss about Wilders visit recently welcomed a visit by someone with links to Al-Quaeda fundraising. Why was this any different? Also, when Ken Livingstone was mayor of London all kinds of anti-Western nutters were welcomed with open arms.

The government can't have it both ways. They either let all the extremists have a say or none at all. They can't pick and choose who gets to exercise their right to free speech whatever their views.
