Ian you are pathetically trying to shoehorn this poor girl's death into your own agenda , answer me two questions please:
1: Do you think the girl would have been alive still had she been crossing a rail line?
2: Do you think she would have been alive still if PC Dougal had ther B&T on?
I think the answer is YES to both and here's my thinking:
1: Everyone's perception of level crossings is: THEY ARE DANGEROUS! Why? because you know that regardless of the speed at which it travels the train WILL KILL YOU! Therefore we take far more precaution when crossing the rail line than we do with the road! WHY? WHY? WHY? WHY? WHY? WHY?
2: Were it for the B&T's to be on she would have looked/thought longer about crossing. Which would have given her a better chance to avoid the colision.
The reason the girl is dead is very simple: SHE WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD! SIMPLE. PC Dougle could have travelled at 120mph past her location and she would have still been alive had she not been in the road! We need to get the kids in particular and everyone in general engraved with the fact that:
METAL DOES INJURE AND KILL. AND IF YOU STEP IN THE ROAD WITHOUT TAKING PROPER PRECAUTIONS AND WITHOUT BEING PREPARED THAT A CAR WILL BE COMING YOUR WAY YOU WILL COME TO GRIEF!!!
Until such time people are going to be hurt on the roads regardless of your campaign about the speed! We need to separate FLESH FROM METAL! We need to instill in people's minds the danger associated with crossing a road.
A few weeks back, whilst we were discussing that long thread on Safe Speed I had a similar incident, well under the speed limit! A pedestrian (young girl with hood and headphones on) decided to cross the road, on red light at pellican crossing, right in front of my car. Luckyly for both of us the front of my car was already passed her so she actually walked on the side of (by then) my stationary car. She didn't look once! For all intense and purposes she might have been suicidal. And she would have wrecked hers, mine and both our families lives! She didn't even give me a cursory glance even after I got out of the car and shouted after her, she just walked on. The other pedestrians could not say a single word! Nor could I say much either! Yes, she might have survived the impact given that I was only doing 15-20mph, BUT I DON'T REALLY CARE!!!!! I could have killed her with my bare hands for just being stupid!!!
Which is why I'll keep telling you and all the people that are paid to do something about road safety: STOP BARKING AT THE WRONG TREE AND GET REAL WITH WHAT IS HAPPENING ON THE ROAD!
The cause of most accidents, AND I MEAN RSEALLY THE CAUSE, is not speeding, it is the fact that people take traffic too lightly! They take too many liberties with their and other people's lives on the roads!
It's not the car that killed the girl in this case, it is the improper use of that car! GET IT IN YOUR HEAD ONCE AND FOR ALL!
