You right, there is legislation in place covering all these things, unfortunately its to allow the employer to do these things! I was fairly recently in the situation of having been unfairly paid for several years, and then being presented with a completely new contract of employment, some of the terms of which I objected to. I was informed that if I did not sign the new contract, I would be dismissed, and MIGHT be offered the job back under the new contract terms! Due to my previous complaints about my wages, I didn't feel too confident that I would be offered it, so felt I had no option other than to sign. And this is all perfectly legal! Not long after this, some redundancies were announced, I wasn't one of them, but why should a company making millions of profit get away with destroying peoples lives just so that 1m can become 1.1m! Workers need more protection than the law gives against greedy, bullying employers.
