Round 3 - Glan-y-Gors - 15th May 2005

Sun tan lotion and floppy hats were the order of the day, (and that was only the drivers) as summer finally hit North Wales. It was a beautiful day from the outset, and we were treated to some marvellous action and some of the best and closest finishes so far in the Glan-y-Gors club championship.

It was also very nice to note that entries were up yet again despite the meeting clashing with other events around the country, and, once again, a very healthy number of novice drivers taking part, 23 in all, again showing a healthy influx of newcomers entering the sport.

Keeping with tradition, the first final of the afternoon involved the Cadet class, and what a championship young James Tunnicliffe is having, once again unbeatable on the day, taking all three earlier heats and then looking totally untroubled in the final, as he took a lights to flag victory to keep his 100% championship record after three rounds, behind him a really good battle took place between Luke Hughes and Joseph Oriordan with the advantage swapping hands on occasions before Hughes gained the upper hand in the closing stages to take second spot, Oriordan in third.

Two novices drivers contested the S-60 Cadet class, and this was won quite comfortably by Nicholas O`Sullivan ahead of Piers Pakenham-Walsh.

The Senior TKM class had provided some fine racing throughout the day with three different heat victors in Alex Jones, Max Reynolds and Paul Monks. The final became a two kart battle between the front row pairing of Paul Monks and Gemma Wainwright, with Monks always just having the upper hand, though never by more than a karts length as Wainwright probed constantly for an opening which simply never appeared, Monks putting on a supreme exhibition of classic defence to take what turned out to be a lights to flag success by just 0.179 secs. Some way behind these two, Jack Oldham and Mark Bartley were having a good battle of there own, but Oldham it was holding on, in the end fairly comfortably, to take third place.

Minimax was another class which provided two battles within one race, as the front row pairing of Tom Wrigley and Alexander O`Sullivan quickly pulled away from the rest of the pack. It had been anticipated that Josh Butcher would make it a three way battle, but an opening lap contact put paid to that, Butcher eventually having to settle for 10th place. Behind the front two it was Oliver Clayton and Josephine Ferrada having a really good battle for the minor placings before, on lap 10, Ferrada had a spin leaving Clayton in a very lonely third place. At the head of the field though it was Wrigley taking up the mantle on lap 4 and holding on under extreme pressure from O`Sullivan for lap after lap to eventually take a hard fought victory by a mere 0.149 secs.

A small field of Junior TKM entries also had a really good battle with the front four of Mike Booker, Oliver Slade, Lee Morgan and Tom Oliphant swapping the advantage on several occasions in the early exchanges, before Morgan finally got his nose in front on lap seven, holding on for the closing laps to take another hard fought victory from Slade with Oliphant third and Booker fourth, the quartet being covered by just over a second.

Some of the Rotax Max classes were always likely to suffer in numbers due to the Rotax `0` plate taking place at Larkhall, but Junior Rotax, despite lacking in numbers, still had some quality entries, and what a day it proved to be for Sam Pollitt. Always consistent, today he was totally unstoppable, winning all three of the earlier heats, then taking the opposition apart in the final, taking the victory by a massive 6.4 secs from Nico Angelides and Oliver Webb, themselves regular victors both here and in Wigan.

Despite the `0` plate there was still a good entry in senior Rotax Max. It seemed inevitable after the heats that, barring incidents, Daniel Chesters and Robert Parry would be contesting the spoils and, in the early stages, so it proved, in fact Chesters began to stretch his advantage quite considerably, but, Parry found himself coming under increasing pressure from David Hogg, the 100 national specialist making a rare appearance in the Rotax class and, by lap seven, Hogg had moved into second place, quickly putting distance between himself and Parry and starting to track down the seemingly unassailable Chesters. In the end, had there been another three or four laps, it could have been very interesting, but the end came a little too soon for Hogg, Chesters taking a fine victory by, in the end, the somewhat reduced margin of 0.590secs, Parry a comfortable third.

Rotax 177 numbers seem to have suffered a little of late, and again it was only quite a small grid, although nevertheless it was always very competitive throughout. David James had taken two of the earlier heats, but it was Adrian Jones who took the lead in the early stages, although James always looked highly dangerous and it was no great surprise when he took the lead on lap four. Once there, he never really looked in any great danger and moved serenely on to take the victory by a comfortable margin of 3.043 secs from Jones. Peter Oakes had been in third place for virtually the entire race and, although he came under some pressure from Stuart Wyn-Jones in the later stages he held on for the final podium spot.

In the final race of the afternoon, the usual small band of 100 national entries had been dominated all day by course specialist Ash Davies. Having taken all three of the earlier heats, he simply roared away in the final, and was never under the slightest pressure as he took the victory by a huge margin of 4.8 secs. His brother Matt took the third spot, the pair being split by James Pierce, who beset by engine problems in earlier rounds, at last had a pretty much trouble free day.
