Pro Kart Endurance Championship
Round 1 - 5th March 2006 - Sandown Park
Sandown Park hosted Round 1 of the championship and despite an atrocious week weather wise, the track conditions were dry and crisp with some warm winter sunshine.
MS-RPM took the pole from AJB1 and Baron Racing, with Spectrum Racing immerging as fastest in the pro-class and Westco qualified as top clubman.
After a clean start, the huge field was headed by MS-RPM and AJB1, with Lucas Racing and DXI-Sin quickly moving up in to 3rd and 4th places. Within half an hour of the start, AJB1 took the lead with the top six all pretty much line astern and AJB2 had moved up in to 7th place as leading pro-class contenders with Westco in a respectable 11th place, leading the clubman class.
As the one-hour mark approached, Lucas Racing, MS-RPM and AJB1 were still fighting it out at the head of the field and now some 16 seconds clear of DXI-Sin and Baron Racing.
Disaster then struck MS-RPM when they lost a front wheel and despite making a come back, a later incident eventually put them out on contention. This left Lucas Racing clear of AJB1 and DXI-Sin, followed by Team Alpha and Baron Racing with AJB2 and Frascati Racing scrapping over 6th place and leading the pro-class.
With the first fuel stop completed, super-pro team Autotekk were the next notaries to slip down the pecking order with a re-occurring engine problem, whilst clubman team Westco were still leading their class closely followed by SD Racing.
With half race distance completed, Lucas Racing were now nearly a lap clear of AJB1 followed by DXI-Sin, Alpha and Baron. AJB2 still led the pro-class in 6th place, just holding off Frascati, www.modelworld.com, Spectrum and World Thunder. Baron Racing then encountered a minor problem, which dropped them down to 9th place, however they clawed their way back up to 5th within the hour but looked unlikely to close the gap to 4th place Team Alpha.
Meanwhile Lucas Racing were now forging ahead of AJB1, until a puncture forced them to make an unscheduled stop with just over 1 hour remaining. AJB1 and DXI-Sin seized the opportunity leaving Lucas Racing down in 3rd place, only just in front of Team Alpha. With just 50 minutes to go, Lucas Racing had regained 2nd place and were just 8 seconds behind the new leaders AJB1. In response to this, AJB1 pick up their pace and increased this gap to 10 seconds with just 15 minutes of racing remaining. With the chequered flag in sight AJB1 took the victory, 11 seconds clear of Lucas Racing and a fast finishing DXI-Sin took the last podium place just 26 seconds behind them. AJB2 took the pro-class honours from Frascati Racing and SD Racing just pipped Westco for the clubman class, finishing in an excellent 9th place overall.
After a fantastic days racing and a very close finish, the teams can now all look forward to Round 2 of the championship at the GYG circuit in North Wales.#
