Round 4 - Larkhall - 19th June 2005
Formula A
Challengers tie for points
Competition for the prized Super One Formula A crown couldn’t be closer after two rounds at Larkhall yesterday left the championship leaders tied for points.
Jason Parrott (Crowland, Peterbrorough) and Riki Christodoulou (Sutton Coldfield) took a win each in the two finals at Larkhall, South Lanarkshire, tying for points at the two-thirds stage of the season.
Parrott had the advantage in the first Formula A final, leading the race from green light to the chequered flag. Meanwhile, Christodoulou dropped from his second place grid slot on the opening lap, but quickly re-passed Chris Rogers (Waltham Cross) and reigning Formula A champion Mark Litchfield (Rocester, Staffordshire), who finished the race in third place.
Fortunes were dramatically reversed in the second final, when Jason Parrott went off on the opening lap, rejoining in last place nearly half a lap down. Undeterred, he ran to the end of the race, and although classified 17th, collected enough points to keep in touch with race winner Christodoulou.
David Gregory (Sheffield) claimed second place after passing Mark Litchfield on the third lap. Litchfield later came under pressure from Chris Rogers for third place, but claimed the final podium spot at the end of the 20 lap race.
The battle between Parrott and 2003 JICA champion Christodoulou, is set to intensify when the Renault-backed B4 Group/MSA British Karting Championship goes to Rowrah in Cumbria at the end of July.
Formula A Provisional Driver Standings: 1st Jason Parrott, 361pts, (3 wins) 2nd Riki Christodoulou, 361pts (2 wins); 3rd Mark Litchfield 350pts; 4th Chris Rogers 337pts; 5th Gary Catt 325pts; 6th Tiffany Chittenden 317pts.
Formula ICA
Bell holds lead while rivals battle.
Matthew Bell (Morpeth) held on to his lead of the ICA Championship after rounds seven and eight of Renault-backed B4 Group/MSA British Karting Championships at Larkhall yesterday.
Thanks to his earlier domination of the series, winning the first four races on the trot, a third and a sixth place finish in the two finals were enough for Bell to protect his lead by a comfortable margin. During a weekend when the top British karting drivers faced bombardment from the weather as well as the usual close competition from each other, two typically hectic ICA races produced results that have closed up the middle ranks of the championship table.
An eventful first final had three different leaders: Daniel Rowbottom (Kidderminster) for the first six laps; then Adam Batch (E Yorks), and finally David Batch (North Ferriby, E Yorks) who comfortably led Danny Cruttenden home for the final 12 laps. Cruttenden (Wilmington, Kent) rose from ninth on the grid to take second place. A disappointing heat left Matthew Bell sixth on the grid for the first final, although he recovered to a podium finish.
In the second final David Batch led for seven laps before slipping down to fourth place. Danny Cruttenden, meanwhile, improved on his earlier final result, to win his second race of the year and consolidate his place as number two in the championship.
Alongside him on the rostrum were two karters making their first appearance on the ICA podium this year. Third placed Marc Wood (Oxfordshire) charged hard from ninth on the grid, reaching second place by lap 10, but was re-passed by Tom Armour (Hornchurch) a lap later.
ICA Provisional Driver Standings: 1st Matthew Bell 382 pts; 2nd Danny Cruttenden 340pts; 3rd Daniel Rowbottom 326pts; 4th Tom Brown 306pts; 5th Jonathan Walker 303pts; 6th Richard Kent 302pts.
Formula JICA
Double win gives Stevens championship lead.
Back to back victories in the Renault-backed B4 Group/MSA British Karting Championship finals catapulted Will Stevens (Essex) into the lead of the highly competitive Formula JICA title fight.
Starting from fifth on the grid in the first final at Larkhall, South Lanarkshire, Stevens leapt up to second place on the first lap, before passing pole-sitter Nigel Moore (Tockwith, N Yorks) on lap two. While Stevens built up a comfortable lead by the end of the race, behind him the competition for podium places was exceptionally close.
A seven-way battle for second place developed at one stage, eventually won by Ollie Millroy (Claygate, Surrey). Probably the biggest beneficiary of the scrap, however, was Oliver Rowland (Penistone, S.Yorks) who started tenth on the grid and mounted another impressive charge to end the race in third place, close behind Millroy. This, coupled with a second position finish in the second final, put Rowland into third place in the JICA championship table.
While there was less trading of places at the sharp end of the field in the second final, the race had an exciting conclusion as the leading trio closed right up in the final laps. With some defensive driving Stevens preserved the lead he had held since the start of the race, despite mounting pressure from Rowland. On the final lap Scott Jenkins (Bristol) joined the fray, the top trio crossing the finish line covered by 0.26 seconds. Jenkins’ third place, and a sixth place finish in the earlier final placed him second in the championship leaving Larkhall.
A disappointing weekend left the previous championship leader, Lee Bell (High Wycombe) relegated to fifth in the standings. He retired at the start of the first final, and from last position on the grid for final two, climbed to 16th place by the end of the race to earn some consolation points.
ICA Provisional Driver Standings: 1st Will Stevens 370pts; 2nd Scott Jenkins 343pts; 3rd Oliver Rowland 342pts; 4th Ollie Millroy 334pts; 5th Lee Bell 332pts; 6th Ben Cooper 322pts.
Formula A, Formula ICA and Formula JICA action continues when the Renault-backed B4 Group/MSA British Karting Championship goes to Rowrah in Cumbria, on 30th/31st July.
