Formula A
Double victory gives Parrott championship lead.

Jason Parrott (Crowland, Peterborough) took control of the hard-fought Formula A championship in spectacular style at Dorset’s Clay Pigeon Raceway on Sunday, winning both points-scoring Finals and earning the chance to meet the Renault F1 Team as an exclusive guest at a forthcoming Silverstone Formula One test.

The only driver in the class to score back to back wins at the same round this season, Parrott has been catapulted to the top of the table with a useful 17 point lead after his excellent Clay Pigeon performance in round three of the Renault-backed B4 Group/MSA British Karting Championships. Having started Final One in fourth position on the grid, Parrott immediately moved into second place before inheriting the lead when Gary Catt (Andover, Hampshire) retired with a mechanical failure.

Catt, who arrived at Clay Pigeon as the championship leader and started the first Final in pole position, was forced to line-up for Final Two way down in 21st and last place, but the 2003 champion mounted a storming recovery to finish in fifth place. Despite the performance, Catt has now slipped into third position in the Formula A title hunt with 2003 Formula JICA Champion Riki Christodoulou (Sutton Coldfield) now in second place.

Christodoulou started the first Final alongside Catt on the front row, but slipped down the field and finished sixth. Final Two got off to a much better start with Christodoulou moving into fourth place on the first lap, later taking third from reigning champion Mark Litchfield (Rocester, Staffordshire) who was fourth in the second Final. Christodoulou is now a point ahead of Catt in the driver standings while Litchfield, who also finished fourth in Final One, is fourth in the championship.

A delighted Tiffany Chittenden (Chislehurst, Kent) enjoyed by far her best performance since graduating to Formula A at the start of the season, the UK’s top lady karter underlining her potential with a highly competitive weekend. She quickly moved from sixth on the grid in Final One to second place and in the second Final, Tiffany briefly led the race during the early stages before finishing runner-up once again. Her results have lifted her into sixth place in the championship.

Formula ICA
Bell extends title lead despite losing 100 per cent record.

Matthew Bell (Morpeth) extended his lead of the Renault-sponsored Formula ICA Championship 34 points at Clay Pigeon Raceway on Sunday, despite not winning either of the points-scoring Finals for the first time this season.

His position at the head of the standings also means Bell will has earned the right to be an exclusive guest of Renault UK and the World Championship-leading Renault F1 Team at Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit on Wednesday, 1st June, where he’ll get to see behind the scenes as the team takes part in an official Formula One test session. In Final One, Bell took the lead from Danny Cruttenden (Wilmington, Kent) part way through the race but Cruttenden, who had started on pole position, regained the lead and took victory.

Richard Singleton (Conwy) started Final One in ninth place, but a late charge saw him climb from seventh position to fourth, before then grabbing third place from Raymie Eastwood (Belfast) on the last lap. Eastwood drove a great race having climbed from 12th place on the grid to his eventual fourth position.

In Final Two, Singleton’s charge continued with the youngster immediately putting pressure on Cruttenden for the lead, before slipping down to third. After overtaking Bell again for second position, Singleton began to challenge the leader during the closing stages of the race. He soon took the lead and the win, placing him third in the driver standings, four points ahead of Cruttenden. Daniel Rowbottom (Mamble), who posted fifth and sixth place finishes in the two Finals, maintains second position in the championship.

Henry Arundel (Arundel, West Sussex) dropped from third on the grid in Final One to 15th place at the finish, but charged back through the pack in the second Final to finish in fourth spot. The result puts him in joint-eighth in the championship table, tying on points with Jonathan Walker (Blackburn).

Formula JICA
Jenkins does the double but Bell maintains class lead.

Following mixed fortunes at Clay Pigeon Raceway on Sunday, Formula JICA Championship leader Lee Bell (High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire) left the Dorset venue as he arrived – with an eight-point lead over Will Stevens (Hadleigh, Essex).

Bell’s consolidation of his position in the driver standings also means the teenager has earned the right to be an exclusive guest of Renault UK and the World Championship-leading Renault F1 Team on Wednesday, 1st June, at Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit during an official Formula One test session.

Both of the points-scoring Finals at Clay Pigeon were won by Scott Jenkins (Bristol), the opening victory in Final One coming after resisting fierce pressure from class leader Bell. Having started from pole position in the first Final, Jenkins led for the first half of the race before Bell passed him at the hairpin – spectacularly taking the corner on three wheels to do so. However, Bell’s lead was short lived with Jenkins reassuming top spot a few laps later and holding the lead to the chequered flag.

Behind the battling duo, Stevens – a double race winner from the opening rounds of the 2005 season at Three Sisters - took third place after a tussle with fourth placed Dean Stoneman (Southampton) and Nigel Moore (Tockwith), who finished fifth.

An incident on the opening lap of the second Final caused mayhem among the competitors, with Bell among the drivers demoted on lap one and eventually finishing a lowly 12th. Jenkins, in contrast, had a clear run from pole position to victory. Another driver to emerge well from the melee was Oliver Rowland (Penistone, Sheffield), who had scored an impressive first JICA win a fortnight earlier at PF International. The youngest driver in the class had a difficult first Final at Clay Pigeon, and lined up only 16th for the second race. By the end of the first lap of Final Two, however, he was in third place and passed Alice Powell (Sarsden) to take second position a few laps later. Female racer Powell, who started ninth on the grid, finished fourth, just behind Matt Truelove who had started the race in 12th position.

Jenkins’ impressive weekend puts him in third place in the championship, 15 points adrift of Stevens who, in turn, is eight points behind championship leader Bell.

The Renault-backed B4 Group/MSA British Karting Championship season resumes on 18th/19th June at Larkhall in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, but before then current Championship points leaders, Jason Parrott (Formula A), Matthew Bell (Formula ICA) and Lee Bell (Formula JICA) will enjoy the rare opportunity of going behind the scenes at a Formula One test – at Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit on Wednesday, 1st June - as an exclusive guest of Renault UK and the Renault F1 Team.
