Formula A
Cruttenden takes early lead
|
Kent teenager Danny Cruttenden took an early lead in the Super One Renault Formula A national kart championship on Sunday (18th March).
Cruttenden, 19, from Wilmington, won the final race of the meeting at Three Sisters, near Wigan, after Lee Bell (High Wycombe) crashed out with a seized engine, bringing the race to an early end. Cruttenden started the championship race in sixth place, and made impressive progress through the field to take second place behind Lee Bell by lap nine. Three laps later, Cruttenden passed Lee Bell, who had seize-up on the following lap.
Bell, 17, had a promising weekend, securing pole position for the championship points-scoring final race. He made a clean start and led comfortably until his engine lost power, eventually seizing and causing him to spin off into the tyre barrier at the end of the main straight of the Lancashire circuit. His incident prompted the early end of the race, with 15 of the 18 laps completed.
A second championship race was cancelled because of bad weather and lack of time, so competitors will have their best nine scores from 11 races counted towards the series, rather than the best 10 of 12.
Three-times Formula A champion Mark Litchfield (Ripley) took second place in the championship final, despite dropping as low as fifth place in the middle of the race, while Jamie Croxford (Wotton Fields, Northampton) took the third podium spot, opening his challenge for the coveted MSA British Kart Championship title.
Just behind them, Scott Jenkins, from Winterbourne Down, Bristol, drove from ninth on the grid to finish in fourth place.
The series will continue at five venues around the UK, with the next round at PF International circuit near Newark, on 21st and 22nd April.
Renault Formula A provisional championship standings: 1st – Danny Cruttenden, 50pts; 2nd – Mark Litchfield, 48pts; 3rd – Jamie Croxford, 46pts; 4th – Scott Jenkins, 44pts; 5th – Chris Rogers, 43pts; 6th Craig Breen, 42pts.

Points tie for
Harper and Eastwood as series starts
|
Workington kart racer Greg Harper and Belfast’s Raymie Eastwood tied for points as the fiercely contested Super One Renault Formula ICA national kart series opened on Sunday (18th March).
Harper, a 16-year old student at Workington Sixth Form College, is the series leader after winning the final championship race at Three Sisters, near Wigan. He was second in the first championship race, behind Eastwood, who played the runner-up to Harper later in the day, leaving the two tied for points. Harper started the first championship race on pole, but dropped back to ninth on the second lap as Eastwood and a clutch of other championship rivals swept by. Harper quickly recovered, finding extra pace over his rivals as the circuit conditions dried out, and finished second.
As the second championship points-scoring final got under way, Harper took the lead going into the first corner, but couldn’t hold it until the end of the lap. Four laps later he was able to make the move on Eastwood stick and stayed ahead until the race was stopped for an incident on lap 11. Eastwood briefly nipped ahead of Harper after the restart, but couldn’t hold the lead and had to nurse his kart, which was leaking water for the final few laps.
Eastwood’s race one victory and second place finish in race two gives the Queen’s University Student equal points with Harper. Eastwood, who was 10th in the championship last year is hoping for more podium finishes and a chance for the title this season.
Meanwhile Cumbrian karting brothers Jason and Justin Edgar competed in the same Super One series for the first time since 2001. Justin, 32, from Asby, was third in the first final after leading briefly, before part of his kart’s bodywork came loose. He started the second race in third place, and finished in fifth place – putting him third in the championship standings. Older brother Jason, 34, from Cleator, finished fifth in the first race, but was passed in race two by several drivers, and finished in seventh place.
Rob Foster, from Folkingham in Lincolnshire, took an impressive fourth place in the championship standings. An eventful first race saw him drop two places from eighth on the grid to tenth at the end – thanks to a 360-degree spin that dropped him as low as 17th at one point. In the second race, however, he moved through the battling pack to finish in third place – a position he hopes to repeat in his second year in the championship. Foster was 14th in the series last year.
The ICA National Kart Championship will continue at five venues around the UK, with the next round at P F International Circuit near Newark, on 21st and 22nd April.
Renault Formula ICA provisional championship standings: 1st – Greg Harper, 98pts; 2nd – Raymie Eastwood, 98pts; 3rd – Justin Edgar, 89pts; 4th – Rob Foster, 84pts; 5th – Jason Edgar, 84pts; 6th – Sam Tordoff, 83pts.
Formula JICA
Two out of two
gives Rowland a flying start
|
Victory in both championship races gave Oliver Rowland the best possible start to the Super One Renault Formula JICA national kart series on Sunday (18th March).
The 14-year-old from Penistone, near Sheffield, won the first final from fourth place on the grid after a close three-way scrap. The race win gave him pole position for the second final, which he won by over seven seconds – a dominating margin by karting standards. Rowland was runner-up in the championship last year – missing the title by a single point – and was delighted to make a strong start to the series at the opening round held at Three Sisters near Wigan.
Rowland started the first final in fourth position on the grid, but moved into second place at the start and then took the lead at the start of lap two. The rest of the race saw a typically hard-fought three way battle between Rowland, Jordan Chamberlain (Newport) and Jordan Lennox-Lamb (Bedford). Rowland got ahead of Lennox-Lamb with six laps to go, and held a slender lead to the end, despite passing several back markers, winning by just six hundredths of a second.
Chamberlain, who started the first final in pole position, retired with a mechanical problem two laps from the end, dropping him to 26th on the grid for the second final. He then made an incredible recovery to finish in fourth place in the second final.
Lennox-Lamb took the runners-up spot in the first final, and battled with Gary Thompson (Co Dublin) throughout the second final, eventually finishing just behind the Irish teenager in third place. James Thorp (Evesham) was third in the first final, but his second race ended with an accident on lap 6.
The Junior MSA British Kart Championship will continue at five venues around the UK, with the next round at PF International Circuit near Newark, on 21st and 22nd April.
Renault Formula JICA provisional championship standings: 1st – Oliver Rowland, 100pts; 2nd – Jordan Lennox-Lamb, 94pts; 3rd – Gary Thompson 91pts; 4th – Tom Joyner 86pts; 5th – Tom Grice 85pts; 6th Alice Powell, 78pts.
